In this unit on India I have learned a lot from the movie. For example I learned how horrible of a life style it must be to be living in the slums such as Dha Ravi. We learned what happens with human trafficking and how it happens with children and adults. Also we learned common things that you should now about India. For instance, the capital city of India is Mumbai and it is the most crowded or populated country in India and it is also the second most populated area in the world.
The country of Mumbai is the 2nd most populated country, behind China, with 1,173,108,018 people. The birth rate for India is 21.34 birthrates. Its death rate is 7.53 deaths/1,000 populations. In the movie you can most defiantly tell how crowded and over populated the whole city was and how many diseases and sickness would have been going around at that time and moment.
India is also a very poor. In the movie people would do anything for money no matter how extreme the consequences are. India is so poor that it falls below the international poverty line of US$ 1.25 a day, and it is a third of the world’s poor of percentage. If you were to live in the areas that some of these strong and courageous people live you would be able to respect them a lot because of the objects and the situations they have to work with due to their lack of money.
I've also learned about the slums in Mumbai. Slums in India are always something that has always been there and sadly always will. Today people that live in the slums make up 60% of Mumbai's population that is about seven or eight million people who are living in those bad conditions. Slum Up-gradation Project was a project that targeted only 10-12% of the slum population, those who were capable of upgrading their homes would not receive as much help and money as the ones who are starting from scratch.
India problem with human trafficking is a very serious issue. It is when children or adults are forced to labor and commercial sexual exploitation. Women and girls in India are trafficked for things such as commercial sexual exploitation and forced marriage. Children are forced into labor such as factory workers, domestic servants, beggars, and agriculture workers. Like in the movie it shows disabled children begging and singing.
I feel that the movie is very accurate with real life in India. I say this because all of the stuff that we learned about such as Human trafficking, population, and slums of Mumbai are all demonstrated and are explained and played out great. Jamal and Salem are both part of human trafficking in the movie. When it flashes back to Jamal’s and Salem’s childhood it shows how overly populated and how bad the conditions are if you live in the slums of Mumbai. In the movie, right now human trafficking going on for Latika for close to her whole life.
